The Department of Parks and Recreations (DPR) conducts routine pruning every year on a portion of City trees in each community Board.  DPR does not accept requests for routine maintenance of street trees.

You can request that DPR prune a street tree if the branches are:

  • Dead or damaged
  • Blocking street lights, traffic signs, or signals
  • Blocking a street or sidewalk
  • Causing damage to property
  • Hitting power or phone lines

The City is not responsible for any tree that is on private property.

If you have already submitted a tree pruning request, you can check your Service Request Status. Weather-related events may delay tree pruning requests.

Report tree branches that are hitting:

Trees New York, through the Citizen Pruner Tree Care course, trains volunteers in tree care, biology, and identification. The course also trains and certifies volunteers to legally prune low-hanging tree branches throughout New York City.

Trees New York is the only institution designated to train and license New Yorkers as Citizen Pruners. The course consists of eight hours of classroom training and four hours of hands-on experience in the field.

You can learn more about training schedules and registration online.
