You can learn about temporary home instruction for a student unable to attend school.

You can also learn about the requirements for home schooling.

Some students with medical conditions cannot attend school in-person. This is called Medically Necessary Instruction (also known as Home Instruction). This is for public school students in New York City.

Reasons for confinement include:

  • Medical conditions
  • Orthopedic conditions
  • Serious emotional condition

Services are offered for school-aged children (from 3K to grade 12). They are available in all five boroughs.

Services can include:

  • In-person instruction by a certified teacher
  • Individual or Group instruction by certified teachers through digital platforms

Any family with a student who is immunocompromised due to the following may apply:

  • Medical conditions
  • Treatment for orthopedic conditions
  • Treatment for a psychiatric conditions

Applications for conditions not listed will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. The curriculum will follow the student's most recent program, with changes as needed. The goal is to allow home bound students to continue their education for a short time.

Students who cannot attend school because they fail to meet school immunization requirements are not eligible.

Home schooling is when a parent chooses to educate a child at home. A parent or guardian may begin home schooling at any time.

The Department of Education does not provide:

  • Instructors
  • Instructional materials

Parents are solely responsible for providing instruction and materials.

Students who receive home schooling do not accumulate credits. They will not be granted a diploma.
