The New York City Human Rights Law protects people with disabilities.
The law requires these places to be accessible:
- Residential buildings
- Businesses
- Public spaces
Public spaces include but are not limited to:
- Parks
- Libraries
- Parking facilities
- Public bathrooms
- Government buildings
Property owners must make changes to create access if needed. These are called reasonable accommodations.
They include:
- Ramps
- Electronic doors
- Handrails
The law requires changes regardless of the age of the building.
The changes cannot cause undue hardship for property owners. This means they cannot be extremely difficult or expensive to make.
